Better to sell 'pakodas' than be unemployed: Amit Shah in maiden Rajya Sabha speech

NEW DELHI: In his maiden speech in the Rajya Sabha, BJP president Amit Shah said it was better to sell 'pakodas' than to be unemployed.

"I think it is better to be a labourer or sell 'pakodas' than to be unemployed. There is no shame in selling 'pakodas'," he said, standing a few feet away from Prime Minister Narendra Modi who was also present in the House.

Shah was responding to the Congress's recent jibes at PM Modi, after the latter, in a TV interview, said that "if a person sells 'pakodas' and takes home Rs 200 every evening, will it be considered employment or not?"

The Congress slammed the government's "wild" claims of job creation, going so far as to say that if selling 'pakodas' was a job, then begging should also be recognised as employment.

Former finance minister and Congress leader P Chidambaram tore into the Centre, saying that "real job creation" was "not happening yet."

Shah attacked the Congress over unemployment, wondering that since the issue had persisted after "55 years of your rule, who's fault is it?"

"This problem didn't suddenly emerge,"

he charged. He further said that the previous UPA governments suffered from policy paralysis.

The BJP chief counted the Modi-led government's Jan Dhan Yojana as one of its major successes. He said that before the BJP came to power, most families did not have "even one bank account."

In his speech, Shah defended the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and assured that once the initial hiccups were over, it would benefit the country.

However, he took exception to the Congress referring to the GST as 'Gabbar Singh Tax'.

"Gabbar Singh was a Hindi film dacoit. How can you call a legal tax dacoity," he questioned.

रोजगार के मुद्दे पर प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी का दिया गया बयान अब सदन तक पहुंच गया है. सोमवार को भारतीय जनता पार्टी के राष्ट्रीय अध्यक्ष और सांसद अमित शाह ने राज्यसभा में अपना पहला भाषण दिया. इस दौरान उन्होंने रोजगार को लेकर पीएम मोदी के बयान का समर्थन किया और कांग्रेस को मजाक न बनाने की नसीहत दी.

दरअसल, हाल में एक टीवी इंटरव्यू के दौरान जब पीएम मोदी से रोजगार सृजन को लेकर सवाल किया गया था. जिसके जवाब में उन्होंने कहा था कि अगर कोई पकौड़ा बेचकर हर रोज 200 रुपये कमाता है तो उसे भी नौकरी के तौर पर देखा जाना चाहिए. पीएम के इसी बयान पर विपक्षी दल लगातार टिप्पणी कर रहे हैं. कांग्रेस नेता और पूर्व वित्त मंत्री पी. चिदंबरम ने भी इस पर कमेंट किया था.

सदन में अपने पहले भाषण के दौरान अमित शाह ने चिदंबरम के बयान का जिक्र किया और कहा कि पकौड़ा बनाना कोई शर्म की बात नहीं है. उन्होंने कहा कि पकौड़ा बनाना नहीं बल्कि, उसकी तुलना भिखारी के साथ करना शर्म की बात है.

इससे आगे अमित शाह ने कहा कि अगर कोई पकौड़े बेचकर रोजगार करता है और अपने बच्चों को पढ़ाता लिखाता है, तो आगे चलकर उसके बच्चे कुछ बन सकेंगे. उन्होंने पीएम मोदी का भी हवाला दिया और कहा कि जैसे एक चाय बेचने वाले व्यक्ति का बेटा देश का प्रधानमंत्री बना है, वैसे पकौड़े वाले का बेटा भी आगे जाकर कुछ बन सकता है.
