Amogh Cleared UPSC 2016 without any Coaching using this Strategy
Hello Readers,
Today we are sharing success story of Shri Amogh Gopinath, who cleared UPSC CSE 2016 with All India Rank 171, without any coaching and that too while working in a private sector 9 hours job. We are sharing the article which was written by Amogh himself on quora. You may read his success story in his own words below.
I have cleared UPSC CSE 2016 with a decent rank of 171 while working in a private sector 9 hour job.
The most important thing about this exam is to find out our individual strengths and weaknesses. Once this is done, preparation strategy has to be moulded according to time availability and our personality.
I was working in a private aerospace and defense company in Hyderabad (resigned after Mains exam) and the job timings was 7:30 am to 5 pm from Monday to Friday. Since it was a production job, some days were a bit hectic, but it gave me ample time during weekends and in the evenings to focus on studies.
Plus, I used to study during office hours after completing my work early and during breaks. On many days, I stayed beyond 5 in office just to study - because this gave a peaceful and conducive environment. I have to confess that most of my optional preparation was done in office.
Below is my Mains mark sheet

My average day was like this
Between 7:30 am and 1:00 pm (lunch), I would try to somehow squeeze in minimum of 1 hour study after completing my daily tasks.
During lunch, I usually finished lunch early and used the remaining time to study.
2 pm to 5 pm I would again try to finish my deadlines early and extend my study hours.
After office, in the evenings 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm was my most productive time.
This gave me 3–4 hours of productive study during weekdays and around 6–8 hours during weekends. During weekends, I practiced mock tests.
For Mains, I took a leave of 4 weeks and fortunately my manager was very supportive of my decision.
Ultimately, I believe it is possible to manage both work and studies. What is required is faith, firm resolve, analysis of oneself and one’s job and finally a right plan
If these things are there, God’s grace and support from your peer group/parents will fall in place.
All the best!
